SAMSUNG 5054 HIGH DEF PLASMA TV
My brother recently bought one of these gizmos.
First, lets dismiss the bad. It takes a long time to program the tuner. Second, standard defintion programing in 480i does not play too well image wise. I I have not been impressed with the 720P broadcasts on the main fox and abc affiliate. The picture is good, but not great. The third thing has to do with burn-in. My brother said he is sorry he bought the set because he sees burn-in in the picture(retention of images). I did not even notice anything till he pointed this out. I would not call this a real deal breaker if you do not use this tv for displaying shopping shopping and stock market channels. If you are going to do that, get a LCD. If i had the bread, I would take this set off of his hands in a minute because IMHO it meets my criteria as a damm good tv.
The Samsung is a 720P-1080I set. The broadcasts on the the CBS/NBC affliate in 1080I have been nothing but superb. I have only sampled a few shows but LAW AND ORDER SVU and a broadcast of THE INCREDIBLES looked as good as one could ask. The picture was sharp, detailed with superb color.
I also played dvds on this television. The first player was a Pioneer DV-37 Elite player. I first set the player to 480I and to anamorphic mode. The picture was grainy. I reset the player to progressive scan mode. The player had a reputation for a great picture in this mode and it played very well. You must use component outputs for this.
My brother recently bought a $30 Magnavox 1080P upconverting player. He also had purchased an HDMI cable. The machine gave its best picture outputted at 1080I, in fact, it was gorgeous over the hdmi digital cable over the Samsung. Movies on dvd took on a whole new look. The best thing that I could say that as an observer I became more personally involved with the observation of the movie in a way like I never felt before, not even in a movie theater. It was sort of like looking at a view of a vista rather than looking just at a screen.
When we were at the store, the Samsung IMHO stood out over the other sets in overall picture quality and contrast, but I saw somthing that I rarely see amont image quality on tvs. The image takes on an appearance of "presence". I have seen this in the past on televisions, but few and far between. This makes the Samsung picture very dynamic to view.
Some reviews claimed they did not like the built in sound of this set. I found that there was nothing wrong with it. It was very movie like in nature and adequate for its need.
HD-tv is not a thing I personally need at this stage of my lifetime but for the money, this samsung is a-ok in my book for what it does. I have seen alot of tvs since 1950 and other for its standard def. performance, it plays damm good for the money and thousands cheaper than pioneers kuro sets.
