TOSHIBA 37 INCH REGZA HD TELEVISION

The Pics are from a DMC-LS80 Panasonic camera from a high-def broadcast on this set.
I really cannot do a full review. I will just conclude that the set plays very well and gives nice sound from its built in soundbar and a very good to excellent picture from high def sources. It also plays 480I dvds very well thru the component video inputs. I would have not doubt it playing even better a upconverted signal and Blue Ray. I think the color palatette is very natural and reproduces "straight wire without gain", an expression used in audio where the sound from an amplifier is believed to not feel processed in any particular way. I have not seen any motion problems of any kind and I attibute that to the Regza's advanced processing. I think the blacks are fine on this set. I think the color reproduction is spot on and accurrate. Reproduction of detail is fine. While not a dealbreaker, a headphone jack would have been nice, but it is not found on many sets anyway. SRS-XT would have also been appreciated though some movies with good surround tracks come through very nice on this set over its speakers. The sound is very well phased and balanced more like a very good amplifier. It was necessary for me to turn down the bass control on this set. Recommended

PICTURES TAKEN ON SAMSUNG S-630 OF DREAMSCAPE-HD BROADCAST

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These pictures were taken on my Samsung S-630 camera off of my Toshiba Regza television. Note the train pic and how much depth it has. Note Max Von Sydow's face in the bar. It is possible that when any of these pics are enlarged they make look grainy. This film was grainy but I felt it had better than average clarity as well as a video thingy I call "image liveliness" That expression defines a picture of great sharpness from closeups to distance shots(the train shot is a good example of this).

THE WIZARD OF OZ-HD PRESENTATION ON TBS TONITE

I watched the WIZARD OF OZ on the above station via satellite tonight on my Toshiba Regza 37 inch set. I cannot be sure, but I believe this print shown would be from the new print that would be selling on the blue ray edition. Videowise, I was not impressed at all. That is because I found myself getting alot of eyestrain watching this movie. I have watched this film before in black and white and color and never had this feeling before. So IMHO, there is something wrong here.

On the same token, I understand that the sound engineers reconstruced a stereo audio track from mono elements. On that end, from what I heard over my two speakers on my tv set, I heard a superb job of sound for a 1939 film. The opening tornado scene's winds sweeped across the screen and whistled around me in my easy chair. The sounds of the muchkins were across the sound field and a you are there feeling. Kudos to Warners on this for doing such a stupendous job of making this film sound so great as it should.

JURASSIC PARK 3-HIGH DEF BROADCAST VS DVD PLAYBACK

------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a non-scientific experiment to compare a high def broadcast of a movie against a comparable dvd thru a Pioneer Dv825 player thru the same high def Toshiba Regeza 37 inch television using a Samsung S630 camera. Unfortunately, I did not have a tripod so I had to handhold the camera. Therefore I lost an important "constant" to the experiment. It would have been nice to have a dvd player that could have upconverted from 480I to 1080I on this 720P television but that part of an experiment was not critical. Different dvd players might in fact give a slightly different picture than the one I used against the broadcast as well. I consider this player quite accurate color wise IMHO and overall picture wise in reproducing a dvd. I have a dv341 Pioneer unit that I think is better. I have seen an Elite DV37 put this one to shame on its picture quality playing at 480P. However I have been please the way this unit has been playing on the component video cables on my set.
It is difficult to label these pictures on this blogger format. You will note there are two pictures of the same scene. The top picture of the scene is from the dvd player. The bottom picture of that scene is from the high def broadcast from the High Def Theater Network.
HERE ARE MY COMMENTS:
GROUP 1-DINOSAURS; The high def pic does not look sharp but that could be due to hand movement. It does appear to look darker than the dvd counterpart though.
GROUP2-GROUP OF PEOPLE; very close. If anything, there is a difference in the color green of which I favor the dvd pic.
GROUP3-BULLHORN-NOte the upper right hand corner of the background of the trees on the dvd versus the high-def. The color is nicer and more detail is showing on the dvd pic.
GROUP4-HAT-The high def does not look sharp but that could be hand shake. Colors on both pics look the same.
Group5-SEARCHING-close in sharpness and color with handshake a factor.
AUDIO: I had two channel audio only on the tv for both broadcast and dvd player. The dvd player won hands down reproducing more details of the stereo and a feeling of the surround track over two speakers at my sitting position than the digital sound broadcast.

NTSC(ANALOG) TO ATSC(DIGITAL)

A significant event in broadcasting occurred on Friday, June 12th, 2009. For 68 years, a system of television broadcasting known as NTSC, an analog form of broadcasting was used. We are now in the digital age of broadcasting and as such, terrestrial broadcasts are now in digital form in a format known as ATSC. Your television must have a built in digital tuner or a converter box to receive the stations you have been receiving on the new digital fequencys that your old stations have been assigned. If you have satellite or cable, you either have a box that has taken care of that matter or in some cases pertaining to cable, they have converted the digital transmissions to analog stations for you.

I am going to hook up attic antenna to my satellite "antenna thru" and see what my television picks up locally on my quam digital tuner on my Toshiba Regza high-def tv. In particular, I want to see the quality of any standard def digital tranmissions from my antenna versus the satellite carrier on picture quality issues.

UPDATE:JULY 29TH,2009: I recenly performed the experiment. It worked very well. I did not see any real difference in the local station transmission from Direct Tv and my own pick-up on the Toshiba's Qam tuner on my attic antenna. On the other hand, the attic antenna worked better with the digital stations then with the previous analog stations it had to pick-up previously.
